Mairéad strutted to me  with a proud smile:”I bought some sweets for after lunch!”

She slid the box across the table to me,  and I stretched forward to scope out her offerings: “Hahaha, To-ffi-fee!! How funnyyyy!!I” I laughed loudly for no reason other than, they were funny sweets with a funny sounding name, and that was enough to send me to Stitch City. As I laughed and pointed at the box,  Mairéad stopped crunching and chewed slower, more thoughtfully– “Ohh, you see, I was reading that as “Toffee” from the time I bought it– Like, you know, toffees!” she pushed her glasses up, and offered by way of explanation: “You know how they did that study and found that people only read the first and last few letters of a word???” she peered up at me full of hopeful scientific fact. I looked back at her, then at the big, bold, white letters emblazoned across the box, and she slipped me a tiny half-smile: sheepish.

I lost my Toffifee ball, dribbled inadvertently, and laughed and laughed. Mairéad is just too funny.
